Game Management Areas

As a freelance PH, Billy works with a range of trusted operators throughout Zambia and maintains good rapport with concession holders and outfitters. This allows him to select the most productive and suitable Game Management Areas and ranches for each client’s priority species and preferred style of hunt. Whether a client is focused on buffalo, big cats, specific plains game species, or wetland species like Lechwe and Sitatunga, Billy draws on decades in the bush and current local knowledge to recommend the right area and timing.
Safari options with Billy
Buffalo & Plains Game
Classic buffalo and plains game safaris are generally offered as 10‑day hunts, with early mornings spent tracking on foot in some of Zambia’s finest bush. Each day is built around following fresh spoor, glassing likely areas, and taking the time to find mature, representative trophies rather than rushing opportunities. This style of hunt is ideal for hunters who enjoy walking, reading sign, and being fully immersed in the bush from first light to last.
Leopard hunts
Leopard safaris in Zambia require a minimum of 14 hunting days, as stipulated by the Department of National Parks and Wildlife (DNPW). Zambia is blessed with a high concentration of mature, age‑appropriate leopards in many of its Game Management Areas, making it one of Africa’s most rewarding destinations for these elusive cats.
Lion hunts
Lion hunts are conducted over a minimum of 21 days, in line with DNPW regulations. All lions hunted are free‑range, and Zambia’s age restrictions and trophy criteria are intentionally stringent, meaning significant time is devoted to assessing age, mane development, and overall quality before committing to a stalk. This slower, highly selective process prioritises conservation and ethical standards while still offering the chance at a truly special, wild lion.
Hippo & Crocodile
Hippo and crocodile can often be added to a buffalo and plains game safari, depending on the chosen GMA and available quotas. These species are abundant along Zambia’s major river systems, where hunts typically involve long hours glassing sandbanks, lagoons, and channels from both land and boat. For hunters who enjoy water‑based hunting and a different style of challenge, these add‑ons can round out a varied and memorable safari.
Lechwe & Sitatunga swamp hunts
Zambia is home to three species of lechwe—Kafue, Black, and Red—and is renowned for superb Zambezi Sitatunga. These swamp hunts are highly specialised and are usually arranged as add‑ons to a main safari, with dedicated time set aside for specific species. A focused Sitatunga hunt typically requires a 10‑day safari in swamp country and involves unique techniques, patient glassing from boats or platforms, and an appreciation for wetland conditions and birdlife.
Elephant hunts
In Zambia, elephant populations in certain areas are increasing and carefully controlled quotas are allocated for both tuskless and trophy‑quality bulls. Hunts are conducted as fair‑chase, free‑range safaris, with a strong emphasis on age, tusk characteristics, and overall animal condition before any shot is taken. Time is spent tracking herds and lone bulls on foot, reading sign and wind, and making sure that the selected elephant fits both legal and ethical criteria.
